description
Tomatoes can thrive within a temperature range of 15-32°C.
Photosynthesis is most efficient at 20-30°C, with growth impaired when temperatures exceed 33°C. Growth slows significantly below 10°C. Optimal soil temperatures for tomato growth range from 20-23°C, with root growth ceasing when soil temperatures drop to 6°C.
1. Different developmental stages of tomatoes exhibit varying temperature requirements.
During the seedling stage, the optimal daytime temperature is 20–25°C, with night-time temperatures of 10–15°C. Temperatures that are too high or too low during this period can lead to weak seedling growth, impaired flower bud differentiation, poor development, and reduced flower quality. During the flowering and fruiting stages, this can result in flower and fruit drop.
2. The flowering stage is highly temperature-sensitive, with optimal conditions being 20–30°C during the day and 15–20°C at night. Exposure to low temperatures or temperatures exceeding 30°C during flowering impairs pollen germination and pollen tube elongation, leading to poor fertilisation and increased flower and fruit drop.
3. The optimal temperature during the fruiting stage is 24–26°C during the day and 12–17°C at night.
The optimal temperature for fruit colouring is 20–25°C; temperatures above 30°C result in poor colouring.
Tomato growth requires a certain diurnal temperature variation, particularly during the fruiting stage. Plants perform photosynthesis during the day to produce nutrients. A moderate night-time temperature reduction facilitates nutrient transport and accumulation, promoting root, stem, leaf, and fruit development, thereby enhancing yield and quality. Consequently, winter greenhouse tomato production often suffers from excessive night-time heating, leading to excessive vegetative growth and other undesirable effects.
