Pruning Tips: Both Main and Side Vines Can Produce Excellent Fruit

It's important to understand that both the main vine and side vines can bear fruit. The main vine grows vigorously and receives ample nutrients, enabling it to produce fruit earlier and yield higher in the initial stages. Once the main vine reaches a certain stage of growth, numerous side vines will emerge from the leaf axils. These side vines also possess strong fruiting capabilities.

So how should we proceed? For ground-level cultivation (where vines crawl along the ground), typically pinch off the terminal bud when the main vine has 6 to 8 leaves to encourage lateral shoot growth. Then select 2 to 3 of the strongest lateral shoots for dedicated fruiting. For trellis cultivation, to simplify maintenance and improve airflow, sometimes only the main vine is allowed to bear fruit, with all other lateral shoots removed.
